James K. Logan, Retired

Mr. Logan retired as partner from Foulston Siefkin in 2015 after 13 years with the firm. Over the years, Mr. Logan had three legal careers: practitioner, professor/dean, and judge. Before retiring, he served nearly 21 years as a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit. As a law professor/dean, he taught 15 different subjects and participated in many lawyer education programs. In 1990 the American Bar Association-American Law Institute gave him its Francis Rawle Award for his lifetime contributions to post-law school continuing education. As a practitioner, he concentrated his practice on estate planning, general business, advice on appeals, and services as an arbitrator, mediator, or expert witness. Mr. Logan enjoyed Martindale-Hubbell Law Directory’s highest "AV" rating for lawyers and was listed in the Best Lawyers in America. Mr. Logan was a Fellow of the American Bar Foundation and the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel, and his peer memberships included the National Panel of Arbitrators and Mediators.

  • As a U.S. Circuit Judge, participated in deciding approximately 9,000 appeals from federal district courts in Kansas, Oklahoma, Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, and New Mexico, the U.S. Tax Court, and federal agency decisions.

  • Served as neutral arbitrator in a $42 million dispute between Microsoft Corporation and Steadfast Insurance Co., 2000-2001

  • Served as mediator in New Mexico dispute between the Zuni Indian Tribe and Salt River Project, 2001-2002.

  • Served as expert witness in a number of legal malpractice or corporate governance issue cases.

  • Drafted approximately 1,000 estate plans, and participated in probate proceedings in 10 Kansas counties.

  • Formed and advised approximately 150 small business corporations.

  • Chaired U.S. Judicial Conference’s Advisory Committee, rewriting (1993-1997) the Federal Rules of Appellate Procedure.
